Most people fall for a ring style first. A single stone on a slim band, perhaps, or a centre diamond ringed with smaller stones. The diamond shape usually comes second, and that’s where it pays to slow down, because some shapes and settings simply work better together. Here’s how different diamond shapes work with the engagement ring settings we offer.
Different diamond shapes complement different ring settings, depending on the look you prefer and how the centre stone is positioned. Our solitaire, halo, trilogy and other engagement ring designs give you several ways to explore these combinations.
Shape and cut have a profound effect on a diamond’s light performance, because together they determine how well the stone reflects and refracts light internally. That’s where fiery scintillation comes from. While the colour and clarity of most diamonds are naturally determined, the cut and shape are where expert diamond cutters make a stone truly unique.
There’s a practical side too. Different diamond shapes and dimensions can affect cut quality and cause variations in brightness. So the shape you choose isn’t only about looks. It changes how the stone performs in the setting.
Round diamonds are by far the most popular shape used in jewellery making. Each one is cut with 58 facets, 33 on the crown or top portion and 25 on the pavilion or lower portion.
Round is one of the recommended shapes for both our solitaire and halo settings. A solitaire is best suited to a single round, cushion or princess cut diamond, and a halo is best suited to round, oval and cushion centre stones. Round diamonds also feature in our halo and trilogy designs, showing how the same shape can work as a centre stone or alongside smaller diamonds.
Princess diamonds, also known as a square modified cut, have 58 facets, with 25 on the crown and girdle and 33 on the pavilion.
If you love the clean lines of a solitaire, a princess cut is one of the three shapes we’d point you towards, and our solitaire settings make it the central feature of the ring.
Cushion cut diamonds take their name from their pillow shape. They’re rectangular with rounded corners, and they’re known for producing more fire and scintillation than a round cut, depending on the clarity grade and cut grade.
That makes cushion a strong contender if you want a softer outline without losing sparkle. It’s one of the shapes best suited to both solitaires and halos, so you have options whichever style you lean towards.
Oval cut diamonds have two identical head ends with symmetrical shoulders and a central belly area. A total of 58 facets are cut, so their light properties are very similar to a round cut diamond.
If you like the way a round diamond performs but want a different outline, oval is worth a look. It’s one of the shapes best suited to a halo setting, where a large centre stone is surrounded by smaller diamonds.
Marquise diamonds produce strikingly beautiful jewellery that stands out when worn. Their long elliptical shape makes the stone look larger, and each one is carefully cut with 58 facets. If presence on the hand matters to you, talk to us about which of our settings will suit a marquise centre stone.
Some styles give you more freedom. Trilogy rings, also known as three stone rings, can be made in a variety of diamond shapes and sizes, and with a combination of different shape cuts and styles. Our vintage designs combine different metals, diamond shapes, sizes and colours, finished with the classic milgrain effect. Our designer rings also bring together different diamond shapes and metal colours, giving you more combinations to consider.
Side stone rings work a little differently. Smaller diamonds are set down the shoulders on either side of a larger centre stone, either within a channel or in claws. The centre stone shape is a conversation we’d have with you directly.
You can also shop by emerald, trillion, pear and heart shapes on our site. Our Diamond Size Comparisons guide shows the typical sizes of Excellent Cut round, cushion, oval, pear, princess, Asscher, emerald, heart and marquise diamonds, so you can compare them before choosing your preferred shape.
It can. Diamonds with the highest carat weight don’t always appear largest. A well cut diamond will seem larger than a poorly cut one because of the way it reflects light, even at the same carat weight. Actual sizes also vary within the same weight bands depending on the cut grade. So when you compare shapes, compare cut grades too.
There are two routes. You can start with a ring setting and explore hundreds of styles in different metals and centre diamond shapes. Alternatively, start with a diamond and search thousands of certified natural diamonds from our live stock database, comparing colourless grades, shapes and sizes. Our diamond search also lets you filter by shape, so you can narrow down quickly once you know what you like.
Choosing a diamond shape is much easier when you can see a few side by side in the setting you love. If you’re torn between a cushion solitaire and an oval halo, or wondering how a trilogy would look with mixed shapes, we’d be glad to help. Our Full Customised Engagement Ring Service is the place to start, and we’re members of the National Association of Jewellers.

Which diamond shapes suit a solitaire engagement ring?
A solitaire can be custom made in a variety of shapes, but it’s best suited to a single round, cushion or princess cut diamond.
Which diamond shapes suit a halo setting?
Halo settings are best suited to round, oval and cushion shaped centre diamonds.
Can I mix diamond shapes in one ring?
Yes, in some styles. Trilogy rings can combine different shape cuts and styles, and our vintage and designer rings combine different diamond shapes with different metals or metal colours.
Does the shape affect how large a diamond looks?
It can. Different shapes and dimensions can affect cut quality and brightness, and a well cut diamond will seem larger than a poorly cut one at the same carat weight. A marquise’s long elliptical shape, for example, makes the stone look larger.
