Most people spend weeks choosing a diamond and a few minutes choosing the metal. That’s understandable, since the stone gets most of the attention. But the metal is what you’ll see every day, it holds the diamond in place, and it changes how the whole ring looks. These are the points we at Hispek Diamonds believe are worth weighing up first, drawn from the settings and guidance we work with every day.
The right metal affects more than the look of your ring. It plays a part in the setting, the gold purity and how the finished design comes together. Our featured engagement settings come in 18K gold, our featured solitaire is available in selected 18K gold colours or platinum, depending on the chosen design.
Precious metals like platinum, gold, palladium and silver are rarely used in their purest form. They’re usually alloyed with other metals to get the strength, durability and colour a piece of jewellery needs.
There’s a practical catch. You can’t tell the platinum or gold content of a ring by looking at it or touching it. That’s exactly why hallmarking exists, which we’ll come back to below.
The difference can be confusing for buyers. Carat measures a diamond’s weight. Karat measures the purity of gold. They sound identical, but they describe completely different things, so it’s worth being clear which one you’re reading on a product page.
You’ll see the gold karat in our product names. Our solitaire diamond pendant comes in 9K white gold, 9K yellow gold and 18K white gold, which makes it a handy way to compare karat and colour side by side.
Our featured solitaire, a minimalist ring with a raised six claw mount head, can be made in any colour of 18K gold or in pure platinum. A solitaire is best suited to a single round, cushion or princess cut diamond, so the metal and the stone really do work as a pair.
Platinum or white gold can enhance a diamond’s appearance, so both are worth considering when you choose your design.
White gold is another option. You’ll find it in pieces such as our 18K White Gold Solitaire Diamond Pendant, and selected engagement ring settings can be customised in 18K gold.
If you’re weighing white gold against platinum, it’s a conversation worth having with our team. We can help you explore the metal options and choose a setting that works with your preferred diamond and ring design.
Yellow gold retains the familiar warm colour associated with traditional gold jewellery. Its appearance and properties depend on the gold content and the other metals used in the alloy. For example, 18K yellow gold contains 75% gold.
Yellow gold can also be combined with white gold in a single ring design. Our featured designer ring brings both metal colours together in a leaf shaped mount holding 19 VS quality round diamonds. It’s an example of how mixed metal designs offer an alternative to choosing just one colour.
Rose gold gets its warm pink tone primarily from copper mixed with gold. It offers a different appearance from white or yellow gold. Our diamond colour guide includes an example of a K colour diamond set in a rose gold mount. Contact our team to discuss which rose gold settings are currently available.
Yes, some of our designs combine different metal colours. Our vintage range, for example, brings together different metals, diamond shapes, sizes and colours, with traditional details such as the milgrain effect.
When you start with a Ring Setting, you can choose from hundreds of ring style settings in a range of metals and centre diamond shapes. Several of our featured designs are flexible on metal too. The L01513 Halo Design Ring with a split shank, with 80 round diamonds surrounding a 1.5 carat centre stone, can be custom made in any combination of 18K gold metal colour. Our featured trilogy ring, with a 1 carat round centre stone flanked by two 1/2 carat round VS quality diamonds, is available in any combination of 18K metal colour and centre stone of your choice.
You can begin by exploring the ring settings, then compare the metal colours available for your preferred design.
In the UK, it’s a legal requirement to hallmark items made of precious metals if they’re to be described as such, above set weight thresholds: 0.5 grams for platinum and 1 gram for gold. Manufacturers and importers can’t apply hallmarks themselves. Goods have to be submitted to one of the four UK Assay Offices, or an Assay Office affiliated with the International Convention.
All our precious metal products carry a laser hallmark showing our unique sponsor mark, the precious metal content and the location where the mark was impressed. Nascoglobal Limited, which trades as Hispek Diamonds, is registered with the Birmingham Assay Office. In plain terms, the hallmark is your independent proof that the metal is what we say it is.
Choosing a diamond ring metal is easier when you can see the options next to your stone. If you’d like to compare platinum and white gold on the same solitaire, or see how a trilogy looks in two colours of 18K gold, we’d be glad to help. Our Full Customised Engagement Ring Service is the place to start, and we’re members of the National Association of Jewellers.
