Diamond Ring Consultation In London: What To Expect Before Creating Your Custom Design

Booking a consultation for a custom ring can feel like a big step, especially if you’re not sure what you’ll be asked or what you should already know. The good news is you don’t need to arrive with every answer. A little preparation goes a long way, though, and it means your time with us is spent on the decisions that matter. These are the points worth thinking about before you sit down with our team.

Preparing For Your Diamond Ring Consultation

Preparing for a diamond ring consultation starts with a few practical decisions. Knowing your preferred ring style, diamond shape, metal and approximate budget helps you explain what you’re looking for. Because we offer both ready made and customised engagement rings, there’s room to explore whichever route suits your plans.

Who will you be talking to?

Our jewellery consultants have many years of experience helping clients choose luxury jewellery. We can help you explore diamond options to suit your preferences and budget, while our experienced craftspeople bring attention to detail to the finished piece.

Ready made or custom built?

This is the first fork in the road. You can choose from our ready made collections, or have a ring custom built with the diamond and ring mount of your choice. Neither is the wrong answer. If you’ve already seen a design you love, you can use it as a starting point. If you’d rather build from scratch, our Full Customised Engagement Ring Service is the place to start. On our site you can begin with either a ring setting or a certified natural diamond, so it helps to know which approach interests you before you book.

Have a style in mind, even loosely

It’s worth browsing our ranges before your appointment so you can point to what catches your eye. A solitaire is the classic single centre stone. A side stone ring sets smaller diamonds down the shoulders on either side of a larger centre stone, either in a channel or in claws. A halo surrounds a large centre stone with smaller diamonds. Trilogy rings, also known as three stone rings, can mix different diamond shapes and sizes. Our vintage designs combine different metals, shapes, sizes and colours with the classic milgrain effect, and our designer pieces bring together different metal colours and diamond shapes.

To give you a sense of the detail involved, our featured L01513 Halo Design Ring with split shank surrounds its centre stone with smaller diamonds. Seeing examples like this helps you decide how much detail you want around your own stone.

Think about diamond shape

Shape and setting work together. A solitaire is best suited to a single round, cushion or princess cut diamond, and a halo to round, oval and cushion centre stones. If you already have a favourite shape, mention it early, because it can narrow your setting options quickly. Our guide to choosing a diamond shape for your engagement ring style goes into more detail.

Consider your metal

Our featured solitaire can be made in any colour of 18K gold or pure platinum, while our featured halo and trilogy designs come in any combination of 18K gold metal colour. If you already know whether you prefer a white or a warmer tone, that’s a useful starting point, and our guide to diamond ring metals covers the options further.

A little 4Cs knowledge helps

You don’t need to be an expert, but knowing the basics makes the conversation easier. Cut is arguably the most important of the 4Cs for sparkle. Colour is graded from D, colourless, to Z, light yellow or brown. Clarity has eleven universally recognised grades, from Flawless down to I3. Carat is a measure of weight, not size, with 1 carat equal to 0.2 grams.

If you’re considering a solitaire above 1/2 carat, VS2 clarity is a useful starting point when comparing diamonds. Our Diamond Education pages cover all of this in more depth.

Natural or lab grown?

It’s worth deciding where you stand before you come in. Our Start with a Diamond tool searches certified natural diamonds, and we also offer a Lab Grown Diamond Jewellery range. If you’re open to both, tell us and we can talk through the differences.

Ask about certification

When it comes to independent certification of our diamonds, we only use highly reputable laboratories such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and the European Gemological Institute. A certificate documents the stone’s grading, so ask to see it for any diamond you’re seriously considering.

Know the ring size if you can

It helps to know the ring size before you come in. Our ring size chart includes UK ring sizes, available USA equivalents, and measurements for circumference and diameter in millimetres. If you can find out the size discreetly before your appointment, you’ll have another useful detail ready to discuss.

What happens once you’ve decided?

For jewellery made to order, production begins once your order has been confirmed and paid for. We’ll email you when your order is ready, then send a dispatch confirmation or call you to arrange delivery at a time that suits you. For UK orders, we use Royal Mail special insured delivery.

If you want to change something after ordering, just get in touch. We’ll tell you whether the change is possible and let you know about any effect on price or timing before you confirm.

All our precious metal products carry a laser hallmark, and each Hispek diamond ring comes with a lifetime warranty and a price promise.
